Local Living Tips

Time difference

Indian time is 2.5 hours behind Beijing time.

Weather and Recommendations

In September, Mumbai’s average temperatures range from 24°C to 30°C, with hot, humid days. It’s advisable to bring lightweight, breathable cotton or linen clothing, and since September still falls within the rainy season, be sure to pack an umbrella.

Voltage and outlets

India uses a 230V/50Hz power supply, which is largely the same as in China. However, the socket type is the three-round‑pin variety (Type C/D/M), so be sure to bring a universal adapter. If you have multiple electronic devices that need charging, it’s advisable to pack a power strip.

Communication method

Before you travel, please activate your mobile phone’s international roaming service to ensure seamless communication abroad.

Currency

India’s official currency is the Indian rupee, with an approximate exchange rate of 1 U.S. dollar to 90 rupees. It is recommended to carry a UnionPay card or a MasterCard/VISA credit card that supports international transactions, and to keep a reasonable amount of cash on hand for emergencies.

Customs and Taboos

  • Indians regard the right hand as clean and the left hand as unclean; when handing objects, please use your right hand or both hands.

  • Shoes must be removed when entering temples and other religious sites, and photography is prohibited in some areas.

  • Avoid pointing your feet at others or at statues of deities, as the feet are considered unclean.

  • When greeting locals, it is a universal custom to press your palms together and say “Namaste.”
