East Africa’s healthcare industry trade show delivers another impressive performance this year.

Many people’s impression of Kenya is limited to it being a “major tourist destination” and a “wildlife haven.”

However, in the medical device industry, Kenya’s role is far more significant—it serves as the procurement hub for the entire East African region.

Kenya is the third-largest market for the healthcare sector in sub-Saharan Africa, trailing only South Africa and Ghana. The medical devices market is valued at approximately US$180 million annually and grows at 6%–7% per year, significantly outpacing the country’s overall GDP growth rate.

China is Kenya’s largest supplier of medical devices, accounting for nearly 40% of the market share.

This is not a “niche market,” but rather a market characterized by “high-frequency, essential demand and a high degree of openness.”

From a data perspective

Looking at the Kenyan market

Kenya has a population of approximately 58.6 million, with an annual increase of about 1.2 million people.

The government’s healthcare budget for the 2025/26 fiscal year is approximately US$1.1 billion, marking the first increase in several years.

From a regional perspective, the six member states of the East African Community (EAC) currently have a combined population of 153 million, which is projected to grow to 237 million by 2030.

The East African medical device market was valued at approximately USD 1.337 billion in 2025, with an average annual growth rate of 7.83%, and is projected to reach USD 1.949 billion by 2029.

However, in East Africa, only 34% of the population has access to basic healthcare services, with just 1.6 hospital beds and 0.2 physicians per thousand people—leaving substantial room for improvement. Moreover, more than 90% of medical devices are imported, with China being the largest supplier.

The market is growing rapidly, the government is making purchases, and the population is expanding.

Chinese enterprises enter Kenya.

It’s no longer a matter of just the past few years.

Mindray’s “Ruiying Ecosystem” remote imaging solution has been fully deployed across Kenya, covering 98 county‑ and national‑level referral hospitals in all 47 counties, thereby comprehensively enhancing the imaging diagnostic and treatment capabilities of the national healthcare system.

In 2020, United Imaging Healthcare installed the region’s first CT scanner in Malawa, a small border town in Kenya. Prior to this, local residents had to drive four hours to undergo a CT scan. United Imaging’s “5G+AI Diagnostic Cloud Platform” has also enabled remote consultations between top-tier Chinese hospitals and grassroots hospitals in East Africa.

According to registration data from Kenya’s Pharmaceutical and Poisons Board (PPB) as of June 2026, Kenya currently has 831 validly registered medical devices and 400 manufacturers. Among the top-ranked manufacturers, Chinese companies hold multiple positions: Shenzhen Mindray (25 registrations), Shanghai Condlai (21), Shenzhen Steadmed (14), and Shenzhen Mindray (13).

Chinese companies have established a clear competitive edge in the IVD and high-frequency consumables sectors.

Leading companies have already completed their transition in Kenya, moving from “selling equipment” to “building an ecosystem.” Meanwhile, for many small and medium-sized enterprises, significant opportunities still remain in the Kenyan market.

WHX Nairobi

Key Highlights of 2026

WHX Nairobi, formerly known as Medic East Africa, was rebranded under the WHX name in 2025 and is co-organized by Informa Markets and the Kenyan Ministry of Health. Following this upgrade, the event has seen significant improvements in its scale, the quality of its attendees, and the efficiency of business matchmaking.

Key highlights for 2026:

First, China’s participation in exhibitions is expanding rapidly. 93 Chinese companies, with an exhibition space exceeding 900 square meters. In addition to industry leaders such as Mindray and United Imaging, an increasing number of small and medium-sized enterprises are also making their way into the show.

Second, the dual exhibitions are coordinated to ensure broader coverage. WHX Nairobi is being held concurrently with WHX Labs Nairobi at the same venue, spanning the entire healthcare continuum—from clinical diagnosis and treatment to laboratory testing.

Third, government–enterprise coordination is central. The exhibition is not just a platform for product showcasing; it also serves as a direct dialogue channel with the East African Ministry of Health, public healthcare institutions, and regional distributors. In the East African healthcare market, government procurement and public hospitals account for a far larger share than the private sector—relationships and resources secured at the show are something other channels simply cannot provide.

Fourth, it radiates throughout East Africa. Kenya serves as a trade hub for six East African countries. Securing a distributor in Kenya can simultaneously open up markets in Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda. The exhibition itself also draws a large contingent of professional visitors from neighboring countries.
