Exhibition Introduction

The Mexico International Medical Device Exhibition (Expo Med), as a world-renowned professional exhibition organizer, Informa A key member of its portfolio, it has long been the premier healthcare event in the China–U.S. region and is widely recognized as a professional platform for business and trade exchanges in Central America and Mexico.

The 16th Mexico International Medical Devices Exhibition successfully concluded in person in August 2025 in Mexico City, with an exhibition space exceeding 6,500 square meters, more than 150 participating companies, and over 5,500 professional buyers from around the world.

Market Overview

Mexico’s current total population exceeds 130 million, making it the second-largest in North America, behind only the United States. Mexico City, with a population of 22.8 million, is both the most populous city in Mexico and in all of North America, and ranks among the world’s largest cities. The country has one of the highest prevalence rates of diabetes among adults worldwide and also boasts one of the largest numbers of people who are severely overweight or obese.

Mexico is the second-largest economy in Latin America, after Brazil. It is an important strategic partner for China in the region and plays a pivotal role in China–Latin America trade relations. Over the past few years, Mexico’s economy has continued to grow, and its national healthcare system has been steadily improved, driving rapid expansion of the medical device market and enhancing Mexico’s standing in the Latin American medical device sector.

 Mexico is one of the key member countries of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), with per capita GDP steadily rising and remaining above the Latin American average. However, the country’s hospital infrastructure remains underdeveloped, with only one hospital bed for every thousand people—far below the levels observed in most middle- and high-income countries worldwide and also lower than those in other major Latin American economies, such as Brazil (approximately 2.3 beds per thousand people) and Argentina (about 3.1 beds per thousand people).
 In recent years, the Mexican government has launched the “Healthcare Infrastructure Upgrade Plan” (2023–2028), which aims to invest approximately US$8.5 billion to: build 20 new regional-level hospitals in six southern states, adding 12,000 hospital beds; equip 500 primary-care facilities with standardized laboratory and emergency‑care equipment; and advance the digital transformation of public hospitals—such as implementing electronic health record systems and procuring telemedicine equipment. These policies are expected to directly boost demand for healthcare infrastructure development and medical equipment procurement.

Mexico has signed a cross‑border zero‑tariff free trade agreement on medical devices with six Central American countries, including Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. Under this agreement, medical devices originating in either party can enter the other’s market duty‑free, thereby invigorating regional market dynamics. As a central hub for the Latin American medical device market, Mexico’s export channels to Central American nations have been further streamlined, positioning it to expand its market share in the region. Meanwhile, the growing demand for medical devices in Central America will, in turn, drive an upgrade of Mexico’s import market, while the complementary nature of healthcare resources across the region will enhance the efficiency of trade in high‑end equipment, diagnostic reagents, and other products.
 In 2024, Mexico’s medical device imports totaled US$4 billion. More than 80% of the devices used in the domestic healthcare system are imported, with local production concentrated primarily in the mid- to low-end consumables segment—such as disposable syringes, sutures, and basic monitoring equipment—where domestic firms hold only about 35% of the market share. Meanwhile, core segments—including high-end equipment, imaging systems (CT, MRI, ultrasound, etc.), and in vitro diagnostic (IVD) reagents and instruments—remain heavily reliant on imports.
 In 2024, bilateral trade totaled US$109.2 billion. China has remained Mexico’s second-largest trading partner for many consecutive years, and Mexico is an important partner for China in Latin America. Meanwhile, China is also Mexico’s second-largest supplier of medical devices, accounting for a 14.3% market share in 2024.
 Central America’s healthcare market holds significant potential, particularly in the realm of medical tourism. Mexico ranks among the top ten global destinations for medical tourists, and the region’s market growth is largely driven by its proximity to the United States. Compared with U.S. prices, surgical fees in Mexico typically amount to about one-third of those charged for the same procedures, while other factors—such as more affordable medical facilities—further bolster the development of Mexico’s medical tourism industry.
