Exhibition Introduction
The Vietnam Medi-Pharm Exhibition, organized by the Vietnamese Ministry of Health and hosted by the Vietnam National Advertising and Exhibition Company (VIETFAIR), is an annual international trade show held in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. With strong support from the Vietnamese Ministry of Health, it has become the largest and most influential specialized trade fair in Vietnam’s healthcare sector, as well as one of the leading professional medical exhibitions in Southeast Asia. Since its inaugural edition in 2007, which was held concurrently with the “China Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Exhibition (Vietnam),” this event has not only established itself as Vietnam’s premier international platform for the medical industry but also serves as the exclusive “China‑branded” showcase for Chinese pharmaceutical and medical companies seeking to enter the Vietnamese market, attracting numerous major players from China’s pharmaceutical and medical sectors each year.
Market Overview
Vietnam’s medical device market has experienced rapid growth in recent years, making it one of the most promising markets in Southeast Asia. According to Statista, the market is projected to reach US$1.77 billion by 2025, presenting attractive opportunities for both domestic and international companies. Cardiac devices represent the largest segment, with an estimated value of US$293 million in 2025, accounting for 16.6% of the overall medical device market.
Vietnam’s medical device market is heavily reliant on imports, with over 90% of medical devices sourced from abroad, primarily from Japan, Germany, the United States, China, and Singapore. Products from these countries account for 55% of Vietnam’s total medical equipment imports. Currently, Vietnam has more than 1,300 hospitals and healthcare facilities, serving a population exceeding 100 million. Meanwhile, an aging population is accelerating, with the share of elderly residents projected to reach 14% by 2025, and the number of patients with chronic diseases surpassing 22 million, directly driving demand for cardiovascular devices, rehabilitation equipment, and other specialized products. At the same time, the expansion of the middle class and growing health awareness are boosting imports of high-end medical devices.
Vietnam’s Government “Primary Healthcare Network Development Plan” (2021–2030) is investing US$5 billion to upgrade 2,800 commune-level health stations, directly boosting demand across three key categories: basic diagnostic equipment, chronic disease management devices, and rehabilitation equipment.
According to the Drug Administration of Vietnam’s Ministry of Health, domestic pharmaceutical companies are predominantly small and medium-sized enterprises that have yet to prioritize investment in drug research, development, manufacturing, and technology transfer. Most firms focus on producing generic drugs, with limited investment in and a shortage of skilled personnel for high‑tech, highly complex, domestically developed new medicines. Vietnam’s “Healthcare Industry Development Strategy to 2030” aims for domestic production to meet 80% of demand by 2030, while foreign‑invested enterprises are required to enter the market through joint ventures or technology licensing. By 2030, it is projected that locally based production lines involving foreign participation will cover 60% of mid‑range and low‑end medical devices.
In recent years, Vietnam has signed numerous bilateral and multilateral free trade and investment agreements, including the EU–Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), the UK–Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA), and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). These agreements have reduced tariffs and lowered trade and investment barriers, thereby playing a positive role in boosting trade and investment in the medical device industry.
