Informa Markets

Exhibition Introduction

As a brand-new exhibition under Informa Markets, one of the world’s leading organizers of professional trade shows, the Japan International Healthcare Exhibition (WHX Osaka) held its inaugural event in Osaka, Japan, in June 2025.
This year’s exhibition brought together 425 leading companies from 46 countries and regions worldwide, including Japan, while attracting more than 9,500 cutting-edge professionals from the medical devices and healthcare sectors to explore the latest industry trends. Centered on key themes such as technological innovation, regulatory compliance, and global business expansion, the event not only provided Japanese companies with a robust platform for entering international markets but also offered international players a high‑value forum to gain insights into the future prospects of Japan’s healthcare industry, fostering cross‑border, multidimensional resource alignment and collaborative empowerment.

Market Overview

➢ Japan is the world’s fourth-largest medical device market. In 2024, its market size was approximately USD 35–40 billion, accounting for 6%–7% of the global market share. According to Fitch Solutions, by 2029, Japan’s market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.4% in U.S. dollar terms, reaching USD 42.9 billion.
➢ In Japan, the population aged 65 and over accounts for 29.3%, while those aged 75 and above—“super‑elderly”—make up 16.8%. Consequently, demand for chronic disease management (such as diabetes and dementia) and long-term care is surging. The accelerating pace of population aging will drive demand for rehabilitation devices and chronic disease‑management equipment. However, domestic firms lag behind their European and American counterparts in innovation within emerging fields like AI‑powered healthcare and remote monitoring, potentially widening the import gap.
➢ In 2024, the medical device market was valued at approximately US$26.2 billion and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.1% from 2025 to 2029, reaching US$42.9 billion by 2029. Key segments include: diagnostic imaging equipment—accounting for 30%, with Canon Medical, Toshiba Medical, and other companies leading the market; cardiovascular devices and endoscopes, each representing 15%; and smart medical devices, which accounted for 30% of the Asian market share through Terumo’s stent products. The smart medical devices segment was valued at US$3.49 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach US$7.33 billion by 2030, with a CAGR of 13.3%.
➢ High-end medical devices are heavily reliant on imports, with an overall import dependency exceeding 50%. China has become the second-largest source of Japan’s medical device imports (accounting for 25% in 2024), yet its exports predominantly consist of low-value-added products such as massage devices, catheters, and cotton swabs.
➢ The Japanese government anticipates that the signing of free trade agreements (FTAs), including the new Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, will open up markets.
Provide more opportunities.
➢ As a country with advanced medical capabilities yet grappling with severe population aging, Japan offers significant opportunities for international manufacturers and startups in the healthcare sector.
