Exhibition Introduction
Medical Japan, the Japan International Medical Expo, is the country’s largest comprehensive event dedicated to the medical and healthcare industries. Organized by Reed Exhibitions Japan, the expo enjoys strong support from various organizations and government bodies, including Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare; the Kansai Wide-Area Association, representing seven prefectures and four cities (with Japanese prefectures roughly equivalent to Chinese provinces); as well as the Japan Medical Device Industry Federation and the Pharmaceutical Society, among others. Held annually in Tokyo and Osaka, the exhibition comprises seven specialized sub‑exhibitions: the Japan International Medical Devices & Hospital Supplies Expo (Hospital Expo), the Japan International Elderly Care & Welfare Expo, the Japan Clinics Equipment & Services Expo, the Japan Pharmacy & Solutions Expo, the Japan Infection Prevention Expo, the Japan Wellness & Health Expo, and the Healthcare Digital Transformation EXPO—covering the entire spectrum of the healthcare sector. Serving as an ideal platform for companies seeking to enter the Japanese market, Medical Japan is a crucial gateway for businesses aiming to expand into Japan’s—and Asia’s—medical, elderly care, and pharmaceutical industries.
This year’s exhibition boasts an impressive scale, bringing together 592 renowned exhibitors from 17 overseas countries—including Japan—as well as the domestic market. Covering key sectors such as healthcare, elderly care, and health management, the event showcases the latest technological breakthroughs and product innovations across various specialized segments. Notably, Chinese companies have been highly active, with 108 participating firms occupying approximately 1,000 square meters of exhibit space, making them a significant presence among international participants. On the visitor side, the event drew 15,285 attendees from 44 countries and regions worldwide, further underscoring its international reach and global appeal.
Market Overview
The third-largest market with a large number of medical facilities: In 2024, Japan’s healthcare market was valued at approximately USD 573.6 billion, accounting for 9.3% of the global market—trailing only the United States (30.7%) and China (19.4%).
Large-scale import of medical devices: The Japanese medical device market is heavily reliant on imported products, with annual import values reaching a substantial scale. These imports span multiple sectors, including medical equipment, diagnostic devices, and reagents, underscoring the Japanese market’s strong demand for high‑quality international products.
An Aging Society and Healthcare Needs: Japan has the highest proportion of elderly people in the world. According to the latest population statistics released by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications as of September 15, 2025, the number of residents aged 65 and over reached 36.19 million, accounting for 29.4% of the national population—a record high. With the growing elderly population, demand for elderly care, nursing, and rehabilitation equipment continues to rise, further driving the expansion of the healthcare sector.
