Exhibition Introduction
MEDICAL FAIR THAILAND is organized by Messe Düsseldorf (Asia) and has been held biennially since 1997, alternating between Thailand and Singapore (where the event is known as MEDICAL FAIR ASIA). Over the years, the fair has steadily grown, becoming the most internationally influential trade show for the healthcare industry in Southeast Asia.
MEDICAL FAIR THAILAND focuses on equipment and supplies for hospitals, diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, medical care, and rehabilitation, offering Chinese exhibitors the best business opportunities to expand into the Southeast Asian market. As a leading medical trade show in Southeast Asia, MEDICAL FAIR THAILAND provides manufacturers of medical devices and instruments, medical technology companies, and healthcare service providers with a platform to showcase their latest products and services, while also giving industry professionals the chance to learn about cutting-edge technologies and innovations. With a broad reach, the fair attracts high‑quality visitors from the Southeast Asian healthcare sector and holds unique appeal for buyers from Asia, Africa, and Europe. Participating in this event helps broaden sales channels, facilitates face-to-face interactions with international healthcare professionals, and fosters valuable business connections—making it highly beneficial for Chinese medical device manufacturers seeking to expand into global markets.
Market Overview
Thailand has a population of approximately 70 million and shares borders with Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia. According to data released by the Thai Statistics Bureau, as of the end of 2023, individuals aged 60 and over accounted for 15.96% of the country’s total population. Meanwhile, Thailand’s medical device market recorded sales exceeding 90 billion Thai baht, with the segment catering to middle-aged and older consumers accounting for nearly 10% of total sales—a share that is growing at an exceptionally rapid pace. Moreover, 80% of Thailand’s medical devices are imported, with the United States, Japan, China, and Germany serving as the country’s four largest sources of medical device imports.
Thailand has more than 850 public hospitals and nearly 600 private hospitals. In response to previous pandemic challenges, major institutions have recognized the investment potential of the broader healthcare sector, driving a 57% increase in medical device transactions. Since July 2021, the Thai government has established a dedicated pathway for eligible foreign tourists seeking medical treatment in Thailand. Committed to developing a mature medical tourism hub, Thailand is projected by the TTB Research Center to generate over 25 billion Thai baht in revenue from medical tourism in 2023.
From 2020 to 2023, China’s exports of medical devices to Thailand increased year by year. On November 15, 2020, the 15 member countries of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) formally signed the agreement during the series of East Asia Summit meetings. The level of market access under RCEP’s trade in goods will exceed 90%, with tariff reductions among members primarily committed to either immediate elimination or phasing out to zero within ten years, paving the way for the free trade area to achieve significant milestone results in a relatively short timeframe.
On February 17, Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Council announced that the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 1.53% year-on-year in 2023, ranking second in Southeast Asia. As the region’s second-largest economy, Thailand’s market reach offers significant opportunities for Chinese companies seeking to expand their share of the Southeast Asian medical device market. The Southeast Asian market has emerged as a new driver of export growth for China’s medical sector; by 2023, it accounted for more than 30% of China’s medical device exports, with this share expected to rise further in the years ahead.
